Weekend Whiplash

What a weekend. 70 and sunny on Saturday meant capri pants, sunglasses, and dinner on the grill. 50 and pouring rain on Sunday meant jackets, umbrellas, and a crock pot stew. Fog rolls in Monday morning... Welcome to spring in Michigan (actually, that can be shortened to "Welcome to Michigan")

My apologies for the lack of new photos in today's post. The camera kept disappearing from it's normal "grab and go" position. Someone has been documenting the developments in a Science Fair project. Go Science! I have regained custody of it and promise to have plenty on hand for Ruby Tuesday tomorrow.

The Developments

Mama Clarice got up close and personal with a new friend this weekend. I'm not sure if I have mentioned that we are still keeping her upstairs in the family room and separate from the crew. This has nothing to do with her FIV+ status as I'm not worried a bit about fighting or possible infection of the resident cats. It began as an attempt to insulate her during the ringworm threat and then when Norm and Simba were sick and I wasn't sure what was going on with them. Since then, I've made an effort to introduce Mama to the crew but... Have I mentioned that she's not particularly brave?

Mama loves, loves, loves people. All people, all ages, all sizes... if you have hands and are willing to pet her (or even if you just have legs that she can rub against), Clarice is your best friend. I'm not certain if it's the forward and blunt nature of my cats when meeting the new guys (Yes, you can take that the mean that Simba "sing songs" at her and Ruby prances right up to her and gives a quick hiss before moving on to play with her toys and Norm just completely ignores her while he rushes to her food bowl) or if she's just a bit shy, but Mama has shown absolutely no interest... zero, zilch, nada... in socializing with the other cats. If her door is open, she retreats underneath a piece of furniture and remains there until I close it.

"There's nothing wrong with being careful with strangers. Did you SEE what happened the last time I met a strange cat???"

"She doesn't meet US does she?"

"Well, she certainly couldn't have meant ME!"

"Have you seen our daddy?"

Anyway, up until now, meeting the other cats didn't seem to be on Mama Clarice's agenda. I have been letting her make the decisions. It's all about her feeling comfortable.

Her room is "kid central"... television, dvd player, video games are all up there. Weekends are hopping. Sleepovers generally happen in there. But this weekend another kind of sleepover happened. Apparently one of the residents entered the room undetected on Saturday night and remained when the kids went to bed.

I woke up Sunday morning wondering where the Roo was. She wasn't sleeping on my legs as usual. She didn't arrive for breakfast as usual. She wasn't in any of her normal hiding places. As I called and called, I heard a meow coming from Mama's room... where they were both waiting for me at the door.

I imagine they got along. Neither seem the worse for wear. I always figured Mama would be just fine with other cats once she was in a situation where she HAD to deal with it. Perhaps now she will be braver when I open her door.

Adoption hours at the store were slow this weekend. The first sunny day in forever meant that very few people were out shopping on Saturday. The return of the monsoons kept them home on Sunday. Here's hoping next weekend is more productive for Mama Clarice.

The Update

While dropping Mama off at the store yesterday, I ran into a woman with a familiar face and a familiar voice. After chatting with her for a few minutes, I just had to ask... "Did you happen to adopt a kitten from us in November? A tabby boy named Lionel?"

Little Lionel of the worried eyes?

And the helicopter ears?

She was, indeed, our Lionel's mama. I'm happy to report that he's the light of her life, into everything, crazy pants, and her snuggle friend. His name is now Matty.

The Roo seemed unimpressed by the news of her big brother.

The Quandry

I have been besieged by spam over the weekend in the form of anonymous comments. Up until now, spam has been sporadic... a comment here and there, usually not more than one or two per day that were almost always caught by the spam filter. This weekend, though? Dozens upon dozens upon dozens of spam comments, and about half of them made it through. The most frustrating? "It seems that your blog ate my first comment, so I'm trying again..." before more spam, more re-directing links to their own blogs (which mostly don't exist).

I'd like to protect the blog from spam comments but I'd also like to keep commenting open here if I can. A few of our valued commenters around here use the "Anonymous" function but sign their names at the end. I don't want to make things difficult for them by turning off the option. But if it disappears, you know why.

And in the world of "You have GOT to be flipping kidding me", within five minutes of posting? An anonymous comment asking for blog advice (they generally start that way before asking to click a link). I know most spammers use bots for maximum efficiency, so it probably isn't particularly helpful to tell them to get a life... but they really, really should.

The Sister Of All Updates!

You all know how much I love updates. Imagine my joy when I opened my e-mail the other day and found an update (complete with pictures) of one of the most strikingly gorgeous and amazingly mysterious kittens that we have ever hosted here in Teeny Tiny Tabby Town.

Remember in September? When the house was overrun with fosters? We had five of the Adams kittens in the foster room. Henry, Tika, and Abby were on a sneezy sabbatical from Petco upstairs in the family room. And in the kids' bathroom? A tortie mama kept her teeny tiny babies in the linen closet. Remember these faces?

From left to right: Willie Rae, Florence, Clay, Lionel, and Roxie Jefferson
(Oh good golly to I ever have a thing for the one on the left!)

Mother Jefferson gave us quite the variety pack...
3 tabbies and 2 Siamese points.

We watched them grow from 3 days old until they started off to their forever homes at 10 weeks.

Clay morphed from a grumpy, toothless little man to...
a most adorable, if bitey, little midget who...
started developing his flame points on his way out the door.

But this update isn't about him.

Florence grew from a teeny tiny moppet into...
a fearless explorer and...
the beauty queen that everyone clamored for once her photo hit Petfinder.

But this update isn't about her either.

Little Lionel worried his way through the baby stages before...
loosening up and learning to become the life of the party who...
was ready to head off on his own and take a big bite out of what the world had to offer.

But this update isn't about him either.

Willie Rae, our tabby girl with the big orange angel kiss on her forehead...
looked toward a bright future and found her way into a spectacular family.

But this update isn't about her either because, let's face it...
Every day is a Willie Rae update around here.

"Winner, winner, chicken dinner... Ruby's here to stay, Suckers!"
She's still crowing about her victory several months later :)

So if this update isn't about Clay,
and it's not about Florence,
and it's not about Lionel,
or Willie Rae...

This update MUST be about...

"ME!!!!!! Just get to it already, Lady!"
Itty Bitty Roxie, the seal point Siamese otherwise known as...
Roxie Blue Eyes, or...
Roxie Roker the Sister Poker left us within minutes of her arrival at adoption hours in November.

Would you recognize her now?

Look at little Miss Lynx Point... striped face, legs, and tail (with an orange tip on the end!)

Didn't we always know she would be simply stunning?

Roxie's mom wrote: "I have been meaning to send you some photos of  Roxie for a while, but time just flies by. Not sure if the photos do her justice. Roxie is gorgeous, with aqua to blue eyes that change color depending on the lighting, and she has tips of orange on her feet and tail. The one photo of her standing on the bookcase shows all her stripes. After a couple of try-outs for other names, Roxie just stuck. She is now affectionately Roxinator, Roxie-roo, Roxi-million and the list goes on. We are all absolutely in love iwth her! Having lived with our old cat for so many years before she passed away in the fall, we forgot the crazy antics of a young kitten; galloping full speed from the family room, using Mike's shoulder as a springboard to jump up and slide across the kitchen island and then down to go galloping to the living room is a common occurrence. So is running at break neck speed up the stairs and across the landing. She makes us laugh. Roxie loves to cuddle, lick our faces and carry her "woobie" toy around for us to throw to her (she acts more like a puppy). Her cuddling and purr is the best sleep remedy you could ever ask for."

ROO???? Aw... Roxie Rooooooo!

I do see a huge family resemblance in the facial structure, especially around the eyes.
What do you think?

Thank you so much for the incredible update! I'm so thrilled that Roxie is doing so well with her new family. Hearing these stories and seeing pictures of my babies makes everything I do worthwhile (Okay, it was worthwhile to begin with but I do consider these special updates my "tip" for good service. I may smile through the weekend.)

Worried, Worried, Worried

Oh bother.... I'm feeling a bit like Eeyore the donkey this morning. My sensors are set to preoccupied and worried.  I'm sure you can guess why, but just in case you're not sure or wondering...

Lincoln Quincy-Adams packed his little bags and moved to Petco last night. Our shyest, most highly sensitive member of the family did not want to go. I'm not sure that I was ready to let him go either... if our quarantine needs had been different, he might still be here. But, our Lincoln (despite being a worrier away from home) is a big, brave boy who is ready to take on the challenge of living at the store.

He refused to come out of the carrier for the first half-hour we were there. I thought I'd wait him out, but he made his intention clear to remain inside until I took him home again... so out he came, with a hiss and a little growl. He hissed at the ladies in residence, he hissed at the dogs outside the condos at their doggie class, he hissed at me... and then he had a drink of water, checked out the litter box, sat in a bed, and sniffed Lila's butt.  He's going to be okay, but I'm still going to worry about him.

Our sweet Zelda went along with Lincoln. In contrast to our drama boy, she popped right out of the carrier and investigated her new surroundings. She looked a little worried when I closed the condo door, but then she went off to have a snack and meet Sadie. She's going to be just fine, but I'm still going to worry about her.

Abby Cadabby is finally healthy enough for her eyelid surgery and she heads in to the vet clinic first thing this morning. It's a minor procedure and she's going to be just fine, but I'm still going to worry about her.

I will update both here and on the Facebook page with her condition when she is home.

Thankfully, there is someone here who is capable of providing enormous distraction. In fact, she virtually dares you to try and think about something else while she is in the room. And so I bring you...

Glamour Shots with Chanel

"Don't hate Chanel because she is beautiful.
Merely appreciate the beauty and snuggle it."

Our former bottle baby is a demanding little princess
who prefers a lap or a shoulder upon which to sit.

"HEY! Chanel is the BABY!
You should want to hold her anyway."

Up close and personal with Chanel as she
investigates the camera.

She has the most wonderfully exquisite whiskers...

And terribly terrific toes!

Swoon...

Distracted yet?

Good...

Me too.

I have a feeling tomorrow will be all about a demanding little princess I know. She practically insists...

ABBY UPDATE (Thursday 1:15 pm)

Abby is out of surgery and, from what I hear, everything went well. She is recovering at the vet's for another few hours before I bring her home.

Is It Christmas YET???? How Many Days Until Christmas????

We're getting closer to that time of year when excited children ask the universal question.... "It is Christmas YET??? How many days until Christmas????"  Conversely, mothers who have been procrastinating through the holiday season ask... "HOW MANY days until Christmas??? How can it be Christmas ALREADY???"

Today is my crazy holiday known as "See How Many Gifts Can Get Wrapped While The Kids Are At School".  Catchy, isn't it?  I always know it's here when the annual "I Can't Possibly Find Another Thing to Wear to ANOTHER Freakin' Christmas Concert or School Party" is finally over. You might think I'm a little stressed. Truth is... I'm not. I'm just really tired and ready to sit for a day with paper and bows.

I'm in the homestretch. Shopping, school baking, and cards are done. Well, almost done. Have you requested your special edition 2012 Teeny Tiny Tabby Town holiday card? All you have to do is send your snail mail address.  I'll run it out to the mailbox in my very best sock monkey pajamas to get it on it's way.

A few guest stars stopped by to help with today's photos.
Let's see if you recognize them...

"This tree is made of a most unusual substance."
"It doesn't smell natural at all."
 "Nope... Doesn't taste natural either."
"Gosh, I hope Florence's forever family has a REAL tree."

*****

 "Hmmmm.... Nope, doesn't feel real!"
"Does the Lady think a purple tinsel tree will fool Lionel?
Lionel is ever so worried that his real family will not have a real tree.
Will Santa still fill a stocking left by a purple tinsel tree?"

*****

"Hey, Henry... Will you look at what the Lady brought upstairs?"
"It's awfully small, Tika..."
"If we keep staring under the tree perhaps teeny tiny presents will magically appear..."

*****

"Sorry, Guys. It just doesn't work that way.
But if you're REALLY good, Abby Claus might leave you a special something."

*****

"Uh Oh..."
"WILLIE RAE'S NOT PEEKING!!!!"
"Roxie either..."
"Roxie was just checking to make sure the paper was secure....
Honest."

"Yeah... sure she was.  How many more days until Christmas??"

Comet's new mama arrives this evening to take home her little ball of fluff.  He's been banging on the door every few minutes and asking if she's here yet, or if it's breakfast time yet, or if I can come in and give kisses... one or the other.

Vixen, Cruz, and Lincoln return to adoption hours this weekend. I love them very much, but I'm hoping to worry about a lonely little Peeps on Monday while he waits to go home on Christmas Eve.

I'll be back on Monday with all the (hopefully) exciting details.  In the meantime... I think I'm out of tape again.
